Face Mirroring: application for treatment of facial paralysis patients

Together with the Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB), we developed an application that facilitates the treatment of patients affected by facial paralysis. In collaboration with the physiotherapist at Bellvitge Hospital, our R&D team devised a system that, based on the ‘mirror technique’, uses a front camera that shows the patient’s ‘falsified’ face to help with rehabilitation exercises. At the same time, this camera monitors several facial points in each session to evaluate the evolution of the therapy.

Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB) is one of the 5 hospitals in Catalonia accredited as a hospital of maximum complexity. It is a tertiary territorial reference center for the entire Southern Catalonia axis, up to the Ebro region, and a hospital of proximity and territorial reference for the municipalities of L’Hospitalet and El Prat de Llobregat. It is a reference center for transplants, diagnostic imaging, cardiac, digestive and thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology and psychiatry. It has been awarded on several occasions with the TOP20 award, which recognizes it as one of the best centers in Spain in the category of regional and national reference hospitals.

Description

At the technical level, the challenges of mirror simulation and point tracking were solved thanks to OpenCV libraries. The system devised by Pasiona’s R&D team takes as a reference the so-called ‘mirror technique’, a treatment method traditionally applied to people who have suffered the loss of a limb. Thanks to this technique, the brain is ‘tricked’ by showing the patient in a false reflex image, with the visualization of the missing limb. Based on this idea, the development of Face Mirroring, the software that uses a webcam to duplicate the image of the face ‘falsifying’ it in the eyes of the patient, while monitoring the key points of the facial musculature with the aim of analyzing the evaluation, was proposed. The video recording is a plus for the specialists in charge of the treatment to be able to make a more exhaustive, specific and sustained analysis over time.
