    Mind maps represent a simple way to analyze aspects of interest for the optimization of the company. Let’s see what exactly they are.

    What are mind maps and what are they for?

    A mind map is a graphical tool represented in schematic format. It provides a better visual knowledge of different concepts and their relationships with the elements that integrate them. It is a widely used tool in the field of learning and can be very useful in the process of design-thinking.

    Although it is usually associated with the concept map, they are different figures. A mind map serves mainly to express ideas and dump concepts around a central theme. In contrast, a concept map is a visual synthesis of information related to a specific topic.

    In addition, there are different types of mind maps, each with its own advantages.

    • Circular map. The data is placed in circles arranged around the main idea. It is a particularly recommended model to represent cycles.
    • Tree map. It is the most common type of map. Part of a central idea to assign branches in which ideas and related concepts are collected. Among its benefits, we can mention the ease with which it is done, which makes it possible to reach relationships far from the main idea.
    • Rainbow map. Start with the central idea and the derived ideas are included on the left side. Thus we advance with the relationships as an arc on the main idea. It stands out because it provides conclusions about each idea exposed.
    • Honeycomb map. This map shows a hexagonal design. It is based on attaching to the main idea hexagonal cells with any concept or idea that arises.
    • Linear map. This map is used to represent flows or list steps.

    How can they help in the design process?

    In addition to mind maps, we find other types of techniques that help us measure
    the user experience
    during the design process:

    • Empathy map. It aims to understand users’ mental models in order to design with their needs and preferences in mind. To do this, four quadrants must be used: Say, Feel, Think and Do. Each type of user requires an adapted empathy map. It can be used at the beginning of the design process and is ideal for arranging interviews with each user.

    • Customer journey
      . It allows to visualize the interaction of the user with a specific product or service. By following all the steps required to complete a task, any problems that arise for the user can be detected. It is, therefore, a chronological and causal model, when looking for the causes of friction points. It also stands out because it is perfectly usable at any point in the design process.
    • Experience map. It is a modality of the
      customer journey
      , with the particularity of addressing all user profiles. It also starts from a chronological order, but without focusing on specific aspects of a person or type of user. Therefore, it is very useful to know a general human perspective, which allows abstracting from the product or service. It is often used before the customer journey to have an overview or when different experiences converge in a visualization.
    • Service diagram. It is another variant of the customer journey, only focused on employees. These analyses are therefore virtually complementary. This is the backstage of the service, to find out the internal weaknesses of the company and find possibilities for optimization. It is very interesting to organize experiences or before making organizational or process changes.

    What does it take to draw a mind map?

    The fastest, most natural and effective way to create mind maps is the traditional method. That is, with paper and by hand. Thus, the mind can work with agility and without limitations. It can be written with any suitable material, either with pen, marker or pen. It is recommended, however, to work with a large number of colors to activate the brain.

    There is also a wide variety of software and websites for mind mapping. Some domains are specific to this task. Others are generalists, but offer the possibility of drawing mind maps. Be that as it may, it is possible to work with these tools on any device, including the computer and tablet.

    Any of these methods can give good results. After all, this technique is used to facilitate the ordering and assimilation of concepts. Especially, if drawings, colors and shapes that are visually attractive are used.

    How to make mind maps?

    Whatever the basic material, you have to approach the task with a creative spirit. The process of designing a mind map should be adapted to the circumstances and availability of each case. While it is always convenient to follow recommendations such as those listed below.

    • Start the process by choosing the concept or framework on which the mind map will be developed.
    • In the middle of the available sheet, draw a representation of that concept. If deemed appropriate, you can also choose to represent it with words. The important thing is to start in the center, since it is the best location to organize the information as it comes out.
    • Leave space for subcategories within the branches that are included. No connection should be left on the sidelines, however far-fetched or inappropriate it may seem.
    • Always opt for curved lines. Straight lines are rather monotonous, while curves capture attention better. In addition, it is recommended to include only one word per line, to organize the information more effectively.
    • When you have finished defining the map, it is advisable to perform a review. This will allow you to refine details, especially if a second opinion is requested.
